The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a prestigious national-level engineering entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to India's premier engineering institutions including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other top engineering colleges across the country.
JEE serves as the gateway to quality engineering education and is taken by millions of aspiring engineers every year. The examination tests students' understanding of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at the Class 11 and 12 levels.
JEE Main is the first stage examination conducted for admission to NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions. It also serves as the qualifying examination for JEE Advanced. Students must score well in JEE Main to be eligible for top engineering colleges.
JEE Advanced is the second stage examination exclusively for admission to the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main qualifiers are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced, making it one of the most competitive exams in India.

Key milestones in the JEE examination process
The official notification and application forms are released on the NTA website. Students can register online and fill in their details, upload documents, and pay the application fee.
Admit cards are released approximately 2-3 weeks before the exam date. Students must download their admit cards from the official portal using their application number and date of birth.
JEE Main is conducted in two sessions - typically in January and April. Students can appear in both sessions, and the best score is considered for ranking and admissions.
Results are usually declared within 2-3 weeks after each session. Students can check their scores, percentiles, and All India Rank (AIR) on the official NTA website.
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducts centralized counselling for admissions to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Students participate in multiple rounds of seat allocation based on their ranks and preferences.
Important Note: Exact dates may vary each year. Keep checking official NTA notifications and the JEE Main website for the most up-to-date information and announcements.
Understanding how your performance is evaluated
JEE Main uses a percentile-based scoring system to normalize scores across different sessions. Your percentile indicates the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or below your score.
Since JEE Main is conducted in multiple sessions with different question papers, NTA uses a normalization process to ensure fairness. The normalization accounts for variations in difficulty levels across sessions. Your percentile is calculated based on your performance relative to all candidates who appeared in that session.
Best of Both Sessions: If you appear in both Session 1 and Session 2, your better percentile score (not raw score) is considered for final ranking and admissions. This gives students an opportunity to improve their performance.
Percentile = (Number of candidates with score โค your score / Total number of candidates) ร 100
Proven approaches to excel in JEE
Focus on building strong fundamentals through NCERT textbooks. Master each concept thoroughly before moving to advanced problems. Solve previous years' JEE questions to understand application patterns and question types.
Attempt mock tests regularly to build speed and accuracy. Analyze your performance after each test to identify weak areas. Practice a variety of problems from different sources to develop problem-solving skills.
Balance revision and test-taking strategy effectively. Allocate time wisely during the exam - don't spend too long on difficult questions. Develop a personal strategy for attempting questions based on your strengths.
Structure your preparation for maximum effectiveness
Aim for 6-8 hours of focused study, split across subjects. Quality matters more than quantity.
Revise each topic within 24 hours, then after a week, and again after a month for better retention.
Take at least 2-3 full-length mock tests per week in the final 3 months before the exam.
Maintain subject-wise formula sheets and review them daily for quick revision before the exam.
